Gift of the Givers has been stretched across the province after a wave of fires broke out in several communities over the past 24 hours.
The first alert came late Saturday afternoon from Klapmuts, where community leaders reported a fire that claimed one life. Shortly after, teams were dispatched to Gugulethu, where another blaze left about 80 residents homeless.
On Saturday night, strong winds fuelled a major fire in Nomzamo, Strand, destroying more than 100 structures and displacing hundreds of people. One fatality has been confirmed, and three others were hospitalised.
Gift of the Givers says it has activated a full humanitarian response, with additional teams sent to Nomzamo at the community’s request.
“Our teams are working around the clock to support families affected by these fires. We’re providing emergency shelter, food, and essential supplies to those who have lost their homes,” spokesperson Ali Sablay said.
The Western Cape has been battling wildfire conditions for more than a week, driven by hot, dry, and windy weather.
Provincial MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs, and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, thanked emergency crews for containing the fires.
“As the hot and windy conditions persist, I urge the public to be extra cautious and responsible with any activity that could start a fire,” he said.
“A single careless moment can place entire communities and our firefighters at risk. Please report fires immediately and follow safety instructions to prevent further incidents during this dangerous period,” Bredell added.
