The Forum for South Africa (FOSA) has called on the government to take stronger action against ghost workers and payment irregularities across national and provincial departments. In the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana noted that approximately 9,000 high-risk cases had been flagged for further verification.
FOSA leader Tebogo Mashilompane said corruption is at the heart of the problem.
“The government must stop playing with the minds of taxpayers. There are active systems in government that can identify who is employed in which department. The existence of ghost employees is a creation of government officials. FOSA demands accountability and serious funding to address this issue,” Mashilompane said.
The forum emphasizes that without robust oversight and accountability, taxpayer money continues to be lost, undermining public trust and service delivery.
