Former British Ambassador to the United States, Lord Peter Mandelson, has been arrested by the Metropolitan Police in London on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
Mandelson made headlines last year following the release of convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s 50th birthday book by the United States Department of Justice. In the book, Mandelson is alleged to have written a personal note to the convicted sex trafficker stating:
“My best pal.”
Mandelson had previously downplayed his relationship with Epstein, despite correspondence between the two being revealed in 2023.
The discovery of the birthday message sparked a political crisis in Downing Street, with both the Conservative Party and Mandelson’s own Labour Party calling for his removal from government.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer ultimately dismissed Mandelson from his position as ambassador, but defended him in Parliament, stating that he had expressed “deep regret” over his relationship with Epstein.
The controversy intensified earlier this year following the US Department of Justice’s release of Jeffrey Epstein’s private emails, known as the “Epstein Files”.
In the documents, Mandelson is allegedly seen communicating with Epstein from the early 2000s. The files also reportedly suggest the potential sharing of confidential government documents and market-sensitive information with Epstein during the 2008 global financial crisis.
