Global Sumud Flotilla delegates have vowed to remain committed to a peaceful humanitarian mission as they approach Gaza, despite facing aggressive naval activity and intimidation.
The delegates called for protection under international law and urged global attention to the unlawful blockade of humanitarian aid and escalating hostilities in the region.
Speaking from international waters, South African delegate Dr Zaheera Soomar described attempts to disrupt communications and apply psychological pressure.
“Last night, we had a few vessels come amongst the fleet. We were prepared for interception; however, we were not intercepted. Many of the vessels appeared to be trying to scramble and interfere with the communication network. We are preparing for a potential interception tonight again, and if not, then we should be reaching the shores of Gaza tomorrow morning on Thursday, the 2nd of October.”
Meanwhile, South African award-winning writer and cultural activist Zukiswa Wanner has called on governments worldwide to take decisive action to end what she described as the genocide in Gaza.
Wanner urged nations to stop funding and arming Israel and to protect Palestinian lives.
“What is happening in Palestine actually affects all of us. The guns that are tested on the Palestinians are the same ones that are going to kill our brothers and sisters. To not understand this is to not understand where we exist as a member of the international community.”
She noted that 16 governments have expressed support for the flotilla’s safe passage but insisted that concrete measures are needed to bring an end to the blockade and the escalating humanitarian crisis.
