The Fisher’s Movement for Change held a protest at Hout Bay Harbour on Monday, urging the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, Dion George, to address irregularities within the fishing industry. This protest follows the organisation’s ongoing attempts to communicate its demands regarding the crisis facing fisheries.
Approximately 60 participants, mainly fishermen, expressed their dissatisfaction with the minister’s lack of response to their concerns.
Beatrice Yon, the coordinator of the Fisher’s Movement for Change, stated, “Our aim is to make the minister listen to our pleas and understand our needs as fishers. We want to meet with him. We are one of 40 different areas organising protests. The main protest is happening in St Helena Bay on the West Coast, where we will hand over a memorandum to the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment.”
