A fire broke out at Paarl Hospital on Tuesday, affecting a small section of the building. The blaze was quickly brought under control, and no injuries were reported.
Smoke from the fire led to the full evacuation of patients and staff. Clinical areas are being reopened in phases once they are deemed safe. The Outpatient Department sustained significant damage, and maternity patients were relocated to other facilities.
Riana Geldenhuys, spokesperson for the Drakenstein Municipality, said early indications point to a vehicle parked next to the hospital as the source of the fire.
“This will be confirmed once investigations are concluded,” she said.
Western Cape Health MEC Mireille Wenger said emergency teams acted swiftly.
“Our immediate priority was the safety of patients, staff, and visitors. Patients were safely relocated, and no injuries were reported,” Wenger said.
