Eight back in court on allegations of abducting, gang raping girl

Eight men accused of abducting and gang raping a 13-year-old girl in Nyanga are expected back in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The case was previously postponed for the men to get legal representation and for the State to get information relating to bail.

During their last appearance, Magistrate Goolam Bawa informed the men that they faced the minimum sentence of life imprisonment for raping a minor.

The group, aged between 18 and 20, allegedly abducted and raped the girl on November 11.

She had been walking alone on Robert Sobukwe Road at about 20:00 when she was abducted by a man who took her to a shack where he and his friends repeatedly raped her.

They apparently let her go the next morning. The girl has since been placed in a safe house.
