The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has opened a case against forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan at Cape Town Central Police Station, citing contempt of Parliament under the Powers, Privileges and Immunities Act.
O’Sullivan walked out of an ad hoc committee probing alleged criminal infiltration while he was still under oath. EFF Deputy Secretary-General Leigh-Ann Mathys said he had neither been excused nor formally dismissed from the proceedings.
She claimed his departure was a calculated attempt to avoid questions from the evidence leader.
“We don’t know who this man is who has infiltrated and who has consistent meetings with IPIC. We don’t know who has just shown his true colours, who has shown that he has no respect, and who, before one of the three arms of state, got up and walked out. The only time he respects this country is when we do whatever the hell he wants us to do. It doesn’t work like that,” Mathys said.
The party argues that O’Sullivan’s alleged contempt of Parliament could result in a fine, imprisonment, or both.
Mathys confirmed that a legal opinion has been submitted to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza and that the committee is expected to meet on Monday to determine the next steps.
