Parents and guardians at Edgemead Primary School have raised concerns after reports that a Grade 6 learner may have compiled a list naming classmates as potential targets. The list, discovered on 13 March, has caused alarm among parents and students, prompting urgent discussions about the safety and wellbeing of children at the school.
VOC News contacted the school for comment. Edgemead Primary School principal Gregory Stockell declined to comment, stating, “I respectfully decline the opportunity to respond and refer you to Ms Bronagh Hammond at WCED Head Office.”
Bronagh Hammond, the Western Cape Education Department’s Director of Communication, addressed the situation, saying, “This is a highly sensitive case involving minors, and the wellbeing of all learners is paramount, including the confidentiality of personal information. We can, however, confirm that the matter is being managed by the school to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all learners, in line with the relevant protocols and procedures.”
Hammond added that the allegations have been addressed with the parents involved, and counselling support has been made available to those affected. “The school will continue to follow its code of conduct in dealing with the matter, and the learner implicated in the allegations is not currently attending school. The investigation will now proceed, and the appropriate course of action will be determined in the best interests of all parties involved,” she said.
The WCED continues to monitor the case closely, emphasising that the safety and welfare of learners remain the top priority as the investigation unfolds.
