Deputy President Paul Mashatile is campaigning for the leadership position of the African National Congress (ANC) to become the party president by 2027. However, his campaign has faced setbacks due to a recent investigative report alleging that his two sons have significant connections to companies that benefited from a Gauteng tender worth 91.4 million, as well as his Cape Town property.
In an interview with VOC News, Dr. Ebrahim Harvey, an independent political writer and analyst, described Mashatile’s situation as a long and complicated narrative. He noted that controversies surrounding Mashatile had emerged even before 2006.
“The situation became particularly problematic with the Alexander Renewal Project and the allegations against him, which were referred to as the Alexander Mafia,” stated Harvey.
He expressed concern about the declining state of the ANC, suggesting, “Mashatile should be the last person to become president of South Africa and the ANC, but one could argue the same about President Cyril Ramaphosa following the Phala Phala scandal.”
