Deputy Minister Judith Nemadzinga-Tshabalala has warned that US trade tensions and tariffs pose a significant threat to industries in Southern Africa. Speaking at the 4th G20 Employment Working Group meeting in George, Western Cape, she emphasised the global risks stemming from the declining support for multilateral labour institutions.
She highlighted that job losses at the International Labour Organisation weaken global labour protections. Nemadzinga-Tshabalala expressed concern over rising geopolitical tensions and trade tariffs, particularly from the US, which jeopardise key industries in Southern Africa.
“These harsh realities extend beyond diplomatic chambers and trading forums; they impact our communities directly,” she noted. “Industries that are vital to our national livelihoods, such as locomotives, manufacturing, agriculture, steel, and aluminum, now face existential challenges.”
