Coping with loneliness and stress during the festive season

The festive season is often seen as a time of joy and celebration, but for many, it can feel lonely, quiet, and overwhelming.

Grief, family conflict, relationship challenges, and financial pressures can make the holidays especially hard. In South Africa, expectations to buy gifts and take part in festivities add to the strain, particularly for those facing unemployment or isolation.

Speaking to VOC News, South African Depression and Anxiety Group’s Operations Director Casey Chamber highlighted the emotional impact of the season.

“Feeling disconnected or low during the festive season is more common than people realise. The pressure to appear happy can make people feel ashamed, and the pause in routines and support networks can intensify loneliness and depression,” she said.

Chamber stressed that reaching out can make a meaningful difference, and seeking support is important for anyone struggling during the holidays.
