COCT continues efforts to contain Newlands blaze

The fire that started over the weekend, high on the slopes of Newlands, moved over the mountain saddle and headed toward the Cape Town Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday night, according to the City of Cape Town (COCT).

Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Edward Bosch said they have two active divisions where firefighting strategies and resources are focused.

“Two helicopters have been water-bombing since first light on the flanks of the Tafelberg Roadside. A third helicopter is en route from Stellenbosch to assist in the CBD as well,” he added.

Bosch further said five firefighting resources from the city are assisting with active firefighting on Tafelberg Road.

“The operations of the cable car have been halted. City resources as well as SanParks staff are monitoring flare-ups in the Deer Park area. Updates will follow as information becomes available,” he stated.
