The City of Cape Town has confirmed that several road closures will take place ahead of the Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s interfaith tribute and funeral. Heartfelt tributes have continued to pour in from across the globe, after the revered Nobel Peace Prize laureate lost his battle to cancer on Sunday.
The presidency yesterday announced an Official Category 1 funeral for the late struggle icon. The public is invited to view the service from a large screen outside the hall. The Grand Parade will be accessible from the side of the Castle of Good Hope.
The following closures will be in place:
Parade street will be closed from Caledon street to Darling street from 6am
One lane between Buitenkant and Corporation streets in Darling street will be closed from midday onwards
Darling street between Buitenkant and Lower Plein streets, as well as Corporation street from Longmarket to Darling street, will be closed from 3pm
The City says additional road closures may take effect, depending on the size of the crowd that gathers on the parade. The public is however urged to watch online via the City’s YouTube channel and social media pages instead , given Covid-19.
A condolence book has been set up outside the St. George’s Cathedral for members of the public to leave their messages and an online one is available here. Condolence books will be available at all sub councils during the course of the week.
