With the 2025 academic year soon entering its final term and learners prepare for final examinations, City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member JP Smith has urged learners to exercise caution, act responsibly, and remain mindful of legal requirements and the safety of others.
This advisory comes amid reports of learners gathering in public spaces, beaches, and popular party hubs such as Long Street.
“The public is reminded that possession and consumption of alcohol in public spaces and on beaches is prohibited under City by-laws. Anyone found in violation will face a fine of R500, and their alcohol will be confiscated,” said Smith.
“It is also against the law to drink and drive, so make sure that you have a reliable designated driver. The City’s enforcement services will increase patrols and vehicle checkpoints on routes in the vicinity of beaches and other popular venues in the CBD,” reiterated Smith.
