Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis presented the final budget of his term, stating that it represents the largest municipal infrastructure investment in the country. The “City of Hope Budget” includes a capital allocation exceeding R13 billion.
“Our extensive MyCiti Cape Flats expansion is now a construction site from end to end, the full 40-odd kilometres,” said Hill-Lewis.
“Then there’s our Cape Flats Bulk Sewer upgrade – also the biggest of its kind in South Africa – along with our multiple wastewater treatment works upgrades, pipe replacements, electricity grid investments, informal settlement upgrades and our many social housing projects,” added Hill-Lewis.
Speaking to VOC News, economist Ulrich Joubert said that if a city fails to work properly with sanitation, streetlights, and the repair of potholes in the streets, then it becomes an unpleasant environment.
