Cape Town is preparing for a heatwave this week, with temperatures expected to reach between 36 and 40 degrees, raising concerns about veld and mountain fires as well as the safety of vulnerable communities.
Speaking to VOC News, Charlotte Powell, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management Centre, highlighted the risks posed by the heatwave.
“There is a risk of wildfires because of the very hot and dry conditions. Normally, we would see an increase in fires during this period. However, the concern remains for our residents, particularly our most vulnerable populations,” Powell said.
She added that elderly residents, young children, pregnant women and outdoor workers face the highest risk.
“We don’t advise any outdoor activity or workers to do work outdoors because they can get heatstroke or heat-related illness,” Powell noted.
Powell also offered practical tips for residents during the heatwave.
“Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water, put sunscreen on children and ensure they wear a hat, and replace lost salt in your body,” she advised.
The city’s Fire and Rescue Services are on high alert.
“Don’t start fires or throw your cigarette butts out of the window. Everybody has a responsibility in this,” Powell stressed.
