Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has launched the City’s flagship redevelopment project at Strandfontein Pavilion along the False Bay coast, a R300 million endeavour.
In an interview with VOC News, Hill-Lewis announced that a National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) base will be constructed and later occupied by the organisation.
“It is a joy to break ground today on this flagship project. We promised that we would rebuild the Strandfontein Pavilion, and that promise is now being fulfilled. It is an emotional day to see this come to fruition. This project was among my first priorities upon taking office, inspired by visits to Mitchells Plain residents who reminisced about their childhood spent enjoying the Strandfontein Pavilion,” said Hill-Lewis.

Meanwhile, Michael Jacobs, chairperson of the Mitchell’s Plain United Residents Association (MURA), said that while the community welcomes the development, they will closely monitor the process to ensure that no intimidation or extortion issues arise.
“The pavilion was in a dilapidated state, so we welcome this development. However, we would have liked to see further investment in poorer areas such as Tafelsig, Beacon Valley, and Eastridge, where there has been minimal development,” he added.
