Cape Town remains the deadliest metro in the country, recording the highest levels of contact crime between July and September. Newly released SAPS statistics show that four of the five police stations with the most contact crimes nationally are located in Cape Town.
“Mfuleni is number one, both at the national and provincial level. Mfuleni is leading, followed by Nyanga, Delft and Kraaifontein,” said Crime Registrar Thulare Sekhukhune.
During the quarter, July, August and September all recorded decreases in murder nationally — except in the Western Cape, which saw 97 more cases, and the Northern Cape, which recorded one additional case.
These figures highlight the ongoing challenge of violent crime in the country.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has expressed shock at the results.
“The majority of the murders in the Western Cape are gun-related. The provincial government, along with the City of Cape Town, has long been calling for investigative powers on firearms,” Winde said.
