The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate stated that it has intensified sewer cleaning operations across the metro ahead of the peak summer season. This programme began in July 2025 and is focused on strengthening the city’s sewer infrastructure and reducing the risk of blockages and overflows during periods of increased usage.
For the 2025/2026 financial year, the City has allocated approximately R92 million towards sewer cleaning. According to Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, they plan to clean about 300 kilometres of sewer pipelines by the end of the financial year in June 2026.
“Every summer season extra effort is put into taking care of our sewer systems, especially in and around our coastal areas, so that we are able to reduce sewer overflows as much as possible,” said Badroodien.
This proactive maintenance is crucial for the protection of public health, safeguarding the environment, and ensuring the sewer network can deal with higher demand during the warmer months.
