Application to remove Rhodes Statue at UCT approved

The University of Cape Town’s application to permanently remove a statue of Cecil John Rhodes has been approved.

The application was tabled before Heritage Western Cape’s Landscape Committee following a heritage statement and public consultation.

The Rhodes Must Fall movement sees the statue’s removal as the first step toward what they refer to as the decolonisation of the university.

The decision came after the statue was lifted off its plinth in April 2015 as students pelted the statue with paint and rubbish as it was spirited away to a secret location.
