In November 2019, during a private gathering, Sandeep Chakravorty, then India’s Consul General in New York, was recorded suggesting that India adopt an “Israeli model” in Indian-administered Kashmir.
At the time, millions of people in Kashmir were enduring a severe military lockdown and communications blackout. Months earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration had revoked the region’s semi-autonomous status and detained thousands of individuals, including regional political leaders, some of whom had previously supported India.
Speaking to VOC News, Southeast Asia analyst Salman Khan detailed the latest developments in Kashmir.
