Political analyst Kenneth Mokgathle warns that terrorism is on the rise across Africa, driven by coups, corruption, and weak leadership that leave nations vulnerable. The United Nations reports that the Sahel region alone now accounts for 19% of global terrorist incidents. Mokgathle notes that extremist groups such as Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen and Islamic State in the Greater Sahara are exploiting gaps created by declining international counterterrorism support.
“Africa has increasingly become a fertile ground for terrorism, largely because of weak governance and chronic leadership failures, which leave populations vulnerable and easily manipulated by extremist groups. These organizations embed themselves with local grievances and exploit community frustrations for recruitment,” Mokgathle said.
This highlights that governments should address governance issues and strengthening regional cooperation are crucial to curbing the spread of extremism and protecting communities across the continent.
