Brendan Weinstein, an American base jumper, tragically died on Monday during a jump attempt near Table Mountain, landing on the crowded Platteklip Gorge hiking trail.
Base jumping is banned in the Table Mountain National Park, and officials have cautioned that these activities endanger both jumpers and visitors.
Speaking to VOC News, JP Louw, South African National Parks (SANParks) Head of Communications and Spokesperson, explained that base jumping is an extreme sport and therefore is not allowed here.
“The words B-A-S-E stand for Buildings, Antennas, Spans (Bridges), and Earth (Cliffs) – the sport is dangerous and is practiced across the world, and the places that do allow for this practice have strict measures and regulations in place,” said Louw.
