Cape Town authorities are continuing the search for a 37-year-old American man who was swept out to sea at Diaz Beach, near Cape Point, on Wednesday.
The NSRI Simonstown duty crew was activated after reports of a drowning in progress, with support from other emergency services.
“On arrival, a search was launched at sea and along the shoreline, extending after dark, but there are still no signs of the missing man,” NSRI spokesperson Craigh Lambanon said.
The man was visiting Cape Town with his family and was on his final day in the city.
Lambanon said he and a male relative, a firefighter from the USA, entered the water but quickly realised the strength of the currents.
“It appears they were in shin-deep water, trying to retreat from the surf when the missing man was swept off his feet and caught in rip currents before disappearing,” he said.
Police Water Patrol and Diving Services are continuing their search efforts. Authorities have urged the public to stay away from dangerous surf zones and to report any sightings or information that could assist the operation.
