Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was sentenced to five years in prison by the East London Magistrates Court earlier today. The sentence was immediately appealed.
The court issued the sentence after Malema was found guilty in 2025 of breaching firearm regulations by discharging a rifle at a rally attended by over 20,000 people in Mdantsane in 2018.
Political analyst Dr. Levy Ndou told VOC News that this is a “difficult time” for the EFF, but it appears that Malema and the legal team were prepared for a harsher sentence.
“This is why there have been talks of an appeal because they were sure the court would not agree with the decision in their favour, and all they could hope for was that maybe another court would propose a different decision that could set Mr. Malema free,” stated Ndou.
“This decision has serious implications on Mr. Malema himself and the leadership of the party, as this will affect his position as a public representative, and his absence while incarcerated will require the EFF to restructure the leadership to fill his position in the meantime,” he added.
