Alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has been subpoenaed to appear before the Madlanga Commission next Tuesday, despite attempts to avoid taking the witness stand through a plea agreement with the State.
The subpoena comes after the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court rejected Matlala’s initial plea agreement with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), paving the way for his expected testimony before the commission.
His appearance is anticipated to draw significant attention, given the commission’s ongoing investigation into allegations of corruption, criminal networks, and possible links involving law enforcement and other state institutions.
To unpack the legal and security implications of this latest development, special security services expert Mike Bolhuis delved into his analysis and perspective with VOC News on what Matlala’s testimony could mean for the commission’s work and the broader fight against organised crime.
