Western Cape police have launched an internal investigation after a video circulated on social media showing a police official from Vredendal, in uniform, making anti-foreigner remarks.
In a statement posted on the official SAPS Facebook page, police said that once the investigation is finalised, its findings will be made public.
“Preliminary findings indicate the member in question is from Vredendal SAPS on the West Coast. Details of the incident are the subject of an internal SAPS investigation led by an experienced official from the West Coast District. SAPS Western Cape wishes to reiterate that such utterances do not represent the views of SAPS or the values the organisation espouses as a law enforcement agency. Police officials are reminded to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times,” the statement read.
Rural and Farmworkers Development Organisation chairperson Billy Classen has condemned the incident and called for the police official to be suspended.
“This is unacceptable, and we have called for the immediate suspension of the police member. This cannot be tolerated. I have sent a WhatsApp message to the Acting National Commissioner because we cannot wait for emails and the usual channels to be followed,” he said.
