Ceasefire negotiations currently underway in Egypt are facing a significant obstacle as pressure mounts on Palestinian factions and mediators to agree to far-reaching conditions for any future deal.
The talks have come under renewed scrutiny following comments by Nickolay Mladenov, the high representative of the so-called “Board of Peace”, who reportedly insisted that not a single bullet should remain in Gaza as part of a comprehensive ceasefire agreement.
Among the demands reportedly being advanced by a body overseeing US President Donald Trump’s Gaza initiative are the complete disarmament of Hamas, the surrender of maps detailing Gaza’s tunnel network, and the handover of weapons held by private Palestinian citizens.
The proposed conditions have sparked debate over their feasibility and the potential impact they could have on efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire in the besieged enclave. Analysts warn that such demands may complicate negotiations at a time when mediators are seeking to bridge deep divisions between the parties involved.
To gain insight into the situation from the perspective of those living through the conflict, VOC News spoke to Abeer Barakah, an English lecturer and Gaza resident, about the implications of these demands and what they could mean for civilians on the ground.
