A joint law enforcement operation in Gordon’s Bay has resulted in the arrest of two suspects and the seizure of 743 units of abalone believed to have been illegally harvested.
City of Cape Town Law Enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason said that, acting on information received on 24 June, officers intercepted a vehicle suspected of transporting the protected marine resource.
The suspects now face charges under the Marine Living Resources Act, and investigations are continuing.
In a separate incident on Saturday, a joint law enforcement operation led officers to a house in Sherwood Park, Manenberg, where the illegal sale of West Coast rock lobster was allegedly taking place.
Dyason said the team acted on information received about the property and conducted a search after gaining access to the premises.
“The officers went to the address and, upon being granted access, found 720 West Coast rock lobster tails. The man who gave them access could not produce any documentation proving he was legally in possession of the tails. He was subsequently arrested and charged under the Marine Living Resources Act for possessing West Coast rock lobster without a permit and for not having it in its whole state,” said Dyason.
