The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is introducing sweeping reforms aimed at restoring confidence in refereeing, Video Assistant Referee (VAR) systems, and its judicial processes. The move follows a major credibility crisis after the Appeal Board controversially stripped Senegal of its Africa Cup of Nations title, a decision that is now under review at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Speaking to VOC News, sports analyst Naazeem Adam said the incident has had a damaging impact. “CAF has been doing well; we had a great 2023, but it only takes one incident. In that moment, all confidence in CAF was lost,” he said.
Adam added that the fallout extended beyond football. “It wasn’t just an impact on football, it was also an indictment on African sport at times,” he explained. However, he stressed that CAF’s broader progress should not be overlooked.
“We saw the women’s CAF finals, it was fantastic, even the refereeing was great,” Adam noted, highlighting recent improvements.
Despite this, he said the controversy overshadowed the tournament. “The whole tournament gets lost in the final game,” he said.
CAF hopes the reforms will strengthen transparency, rebuild trust, and prevent similar controversies in future competitions.
