Following reports of unknown individuals burning copper cable along the canal on the M5 highway near the MSC shipping yard on Friday, the Law Enforcement Metals Theft Unit responded and detected two men at the scene.
“As they moved closer, they saw a large amount of copper cable that was about to be burned so that the thieves could access the valuable copper inside. The officers questioned the suspects about the origin of the cable, but they could not provide a satisfactory answer,” said Law Enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason.
According to Dyason, representatives from Telkom were then contacted, and they confirmed that the cable belonged to the company.
“The suspects were arrested for possession of stolen property. The total amount of copper cable recovered weighed approximately 380 kg. The suspects were detained at Maitland SAPS,” Dyason added.
