Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has announced his candidacy to succeed John Steenhuisen as leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) at the party’s elective congress scheduled for 11 April. Hill-Lewis said his objective is to strengthen the party and demonstrate effective governance that benefits all South Africans.
Speaking to VOC News, political analyst Sanet Solomons noted uncertainty over whether Steenhuisen intended to participate in the Government of National Unity (GNU).
“There were people within the DA who were happy with the coalition, but there were also others who felt the DA needed to return to its core values. Some believed the party was becoming absorbed and was not as strong as it had been prior to the GNU,” Solomons said.
