The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued a nationwide recall of selected ButtaNutt peanut butter products after tests revealed aflatoxin levels above the permitted limit.
The affected batches were manufactured on 15 January 2026 and distributed across Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and Gauteng. Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by certain fungi and may cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
NCC Acting Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu urged consumers to act immediately.
“Consumers should stop using the affected products and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. The NCC is engaging with the supplier to determine the extent of the contamination, including whether it originated from raw nut suppliers,” he said.
NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba said the commission is closely monitoring the recall process.
“This is being handled in accordance with the Consumer Protection Act to ensure consumer safety and supplier accountability,” Ntaba said.
The NCC has encouraged consumers to remain vigilant and to report any adverse reactions. Investigations are ongoing to prevent the further distribution of contaminated products.
