Western Cape police are searching for three suspects following an armed house robbery during a surprise birthday celebration in Browns Farm, Philippi.
The incident occurred on Saturday when three unknown men allegedly entered a home where guests were preparing for a party. Police say the suspects pretended to be invited guests, greeting and hugging people inside the house before briefly leaving the premises.
“They later returned armed with a firearm and threatened the occupants, demanding their cellphones and cash,” said police spokesperson Ndakhe Gwala.
According to police, the suspects fled the scene with 12 cellphones, R130 in cash, and alcohol. No injuries were reported, but those inside the house were left traumatised.
A video circulating on social media shows women inside the house preparing for the celebration when the men enter. The victims appear shocked and frightened, and one of the suspects is seen slapping one of the women during the robbery.
Gwala confirmed that no arrests have been made at this stage.
“The suspects are still at large and the investigation is ongoing,” she said.
