President Cyril Ramaphosa has instructed acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola to establish a special investigations task team to probe claims referred by the Madlanga Commission.
The Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System was set up in July last year following allegations by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi about a criminal syndicate operating within law enforcement. Its interim report was submitted in December 2025.
Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said Ramaphosa welcomed the referrals for immediate criminal investigation and prosecution.
“The President expects all law enforcement agencies to act with speed in implementing the Commission’s recommendations. Immediate action is needed to restore public trust and strengthen operational capacity,” Magwenya said.
The referrals concern allegations of criminality, corruption, fraud, murder, and perjury involving officials in the SAPS, Ekurhuleni Metro Police, and City of Ekurhuleni, including Major General Lesetja Senona and suspended EMPD Chief Julius Mkhwanazi.
RISE Mzansi Chief Organiser and National Assembly Whip Makashule Gana said members of the new task team must have security clearance.
“None of the members should be people who have testified or will testify before the Commission or Parliament’s ad hoc Committee,” Gana said.
The task team will report directly to Masemola and begin investigations against the individuals highlighted by the commission.
