The rand continues its upward trajectory against the U.S. dollar, exceeding R16 to the dollar for the first time in nearly four years.
Over the last month, the rand has gained 3.86% and is currently 14.41% stronger compared to a year ago.
This represents one of its most durable phases in recent years.
Speaking to VOC News, economist Ulrich Joubert noted the most evident factor is the weakening of the dollar against all currencies.
“This trend has been ongoing since April 2025, and the same can be said about the euro and the British pound against the dollar,” said Joubert.
“We were also removed from the greylisting last year by the European Union, and we had a very modest improvement in our credit rating by standard and poor credit rating agency (S&P Global Ratings),” he added.
