The City of Cape Town is taking legal action after a group allegedly tried to remove the appointed security company at the new MyCiTi Spine Road depots and replace it with their preferred contractor.
According to the City, the group arrived on Monday and forced the security team off the site, warning that they would disrupt operations or damage the facility if their demands were not met.
This comes after a heated meeting last week, where City officials were told to replace the legally appointed provider with another company that only worked on the construction phase. The group also demanded that cleaning and security jobs at the depot be reserved for companies from Ward 99 and the broader Khayelitsha area.
Mayco member for Urban Mobility Rob Quintas said the City cannot allow this behaviour.
“We will not tolerate intimidation or interference in lawful procurement,” he said.
“Any threat of vandalism or disruption to municipal services is a criminal offence and will be treated as such.”
Cases have been opened with SAPS, and the City is seeking an urgent interdict to protect the depot.
