The basic education department is calling on schools to immediately dismiss any educator listed on the National Register for Sex Offenders. This reminder comes as the country marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.
To strengthen protections for learners, the DBE has issued firm, non-negotiable instructions to all Provincial Education Departments, which employ educators, requiring the immediate termination of anyone who endangers the dignity, wellbeing, or safety of children.
“Individuals who pose such risks have no place in classrooms.” Department said.
The DBE is also expanding the Safe Schools Protocol, a joint initiative with the South African Police Service, which helps schools respond to safety concerns through audits, police partnerships, and improved reporting channels.
Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube also urged parents to take an active role in guiding their children.
“Parents should set boundaries, insist on accountability, and ensure their children are not perpetrators of harm.” She said.
