Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced a new reform system that will allow metro municipalities to access additional funds from the National Treasury upon meeting specific performance targets. The initiative forms part of a broader state budget reform aimed at reducing wasteful expenditure.
Godongwana noted that, in the absence of tax increases, the Treasury’s main option is to cut spending, starting with inefficiencies and wasteful expenses.
Speaking to VOC News, political analyst Redge Nkosi described the proposed reform as a matter of concern, highlighting potential challenges for municipalities and service delivery.
