The Madlanga Commission adjourned unexpectedly on Wednesday after Crime Intelligence head, Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo, fell ill before he could continue his testimony.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed that a decision on whether hearings will resume on Thursday will be communicated to the public.
“I think it is very important for us to say that the hearing was scheduled to start at 9:30, and nothing out of the ordinary occurred except that General Khumalo was not feeling well. Justice Madlanga took the decision to adjourn for the day instead,” Michaels explained. He further emphasized that the hearings are still in their first phase.
Before the adjournment, Khumalo had been presenting key evidence regarding alleged links between businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, ANC influencer Brown Mogotsi, and suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. On Tuesday, Khumalo revealed that Mogotsi had gained access to highly classified police information, including details about the disbandment of the KwaZulu-Natal political killings task team.
According to Khumalo, Mogotsi knew of the task team’s closure and informed Matlala about it even before the decision was officially made public. He also testified that Mogotsi was aware of the transfer of 121 dockets to Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.
“Soon after the disbandment, the letter was circulating on social media before it went through official SAPS communication channels. There was a lot of misinformation, but it always related to the political killings task team,” Khumalo told the commission.
