Correctional Services National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale announced urgent management changes at Pollsmoor Correctional Centre after recent security breaches.
The move comes after several prisoners managed to escape the facility in recent months, with many walking out undetected by impersonating other inmates en route to court.
Thobakgale said the measures are intended to stabilise operations, protect both staff and inmates, and restore public trust in the correctional system. Interventions include stricter inmate management, enhanced security protocols, increased monitoring, and targeted staff training.
To strengthen leadership at the facility, Thobakgale appointed Abel Mashaba, who will serve as Head of the Pollsmoor remand centre, with Michael Mafukata as Deputy Head. Both leaders are from outside the Western Cape and will be responsible for overseeing the section where most of the escapes occurred.
“There will be accountability and consequences for those found to have neglected their duties,” Thobakgale said.
“I have appointed Mr. Mashaba as Head of the remand section, responsible for all operations in this unit. Mr. Mafukata will serve as Deputy Head, supporting Mr. Mashaba in managing the remand section. They will resume duty with immediate effect.”
Thobakgale stressed that swift and decisive action was critical to ensure Pollsmoor meets national correctional standards and to prevent further incidents.
