Following ongoing tensions between rival taxi organisations, the Western Cape Government announced on Friday the closure of several routes between Khayelitsha, Lwandle, Mfuleni, and Somerset West for 30 days.
“The Safety and Security Directorate has been monitoring routes since tensions escalated. With the closures, our enforcement services will work through the Joint Operations Centre (JOC) to ensure compliance and mitigate any potential risks to public safety,” stated Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith.
“My office has received numerous calls from members of the public enquiring about a taxi strike. For the record, this is not a strike, but the closure of routes for a predetermined period, meaning taxis are not allowed to operate on the stipulated routes,” clarified Smith.
