Eskom Forecasts No Load-Shedding for Upcoming Summer, Minister Says

Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has announced that Eskom’s Summer Outlook, covering 1 September to 31 March next year, predicts no load-shedding. The power system now has 15,000 megawatts of capacity, providing significant headroom above previous thresholds.

Ramokgopa credited Eskom staff for turning the organisation around, but cautioned that some households may still experience load reductions due to municipal infrastructure constraints.

He emphasized that these reductions should not be confused with load shedding.

“There will not be load-shedding in terms of our summer outlook. We are approaching the end of load-shedding, but it’s not all rosy. Around 1.5 million Eskom customers are currently experiencing load reduction. We are finalizing our strategy to end this,” he said.

Unlike scheduled national load-shedding, load reduction is a localised response to overloaded systems, often in areas with numerous illegal connections. Utilities reduce demand to prevent infrastructure failures, which has become the norm in some districts.

While Eskom moves past the national energy crisis, localised electricity challenges remain a concern for certain communities.
