Police have confirmed that the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry will only receive copies of the 121 case dockets linked to allegations of corruption within the service, while the original files remain with the KwaZulu-Natal political killings task team.
The commission, led by Justice Madlanga, is investigating criminality, political interference, and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system. The dockets are central to KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s claims of political interference in high-profile cases.
National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the police fully support the inquiry.
“The Madlanga Commission has not pronounced on whether they would require the dockets. As soon as they submit that they require the dockets to be presented before the Commission, the dockets will be made available. Of the 121 dockets, 107 are murder-related cases of councillors, party members, and traditional leaders,” she said.
Mathe added that the commission will be provided with the files in whatever format is required.
“Should the commission need these dockets, we’ve got copies. Or in any format that they need them, whether they require the originals, the originals will then be taken back and sent back to Pretoria.”
