As gun violence continues to plague the Cape Flats, police recovered 19 firearms, 1,500 rounds of ammunition, three gun safes, 26 magazines, and a stun grenade concealed in cooler boxes and safes at a house in Lentegeur on Monday.
This comes as the South African Police Service (SAPS) has intensified operations targeting identified gang hotspots across the metro.
Police spokesperson Novela Potelwa stated:
“While no arrests have been made yet, detectives are questioning several people. The find is believed to be part of an orchestrated plan to perpetuate gang violence that is currently afflicting several communities in Cape Town. The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing as part of the ongoing investigation.”
Speaking to VOC News, chairperson of the Cape Flats Safety Forum, Abie Isaacs, called for an urgent investigation into the root causes of gun violence in the region.
“Our question now is who is arming whom and whether there is a sinister force operating here in the Western Cape, particularly on the Cape Flats,” said Isaacs.
“We have long been calling for a special probe to address gun violence.”
He further criticized the current anti-gang strategy, noting that while authorities were recovering firearms, shots were reported in other areas of Mitchells Plain, highlighting ongoing insecurity in the community.
