The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed it will begin rolling out biometric enrolment for all social grant beneficiaries from September.
The new system aims to strengthen security, prevent fraud, and ensure grants are paid directly to rightful recipients. Beneficiaries will be required to register their fingerprints and other biometric details during the process.
SASSA spokesperson Andile Tshona said the Beneficiary Biometric Enrolment comes at a crucial time as the agency intensifies efforts to improve its systems and root out fraud.
“The new system will improve efficiency, reduce identity theft, and protect millions of vulnerable South Africans who rely on monthly grants. The agency has set up the necessary infrastructure and tools in all its offices across the country, and the month of August is being used to train frontline staff to ensure readiness, effective and efficient implementation of the biometric enrolment,” Tshona explained.
Details on when and how beneficiaries must present themselves for enrolment will be announced in the coming weeks.
