Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has announced that eleven new freight rail operators have been granted permission to join the Transnet network. The operators will run trains on six key corridors, covering 41 routes, and are expected to move an additional 20 million tonnes of goods per year starting next year. Creecy says that this is a significant rail reform step that will open the sector to private investment, improve efficiency, and create jobs.
“The national rail policy was approved by the cabinet in March 2022, paving the way for third-party participation in the Transnet network while the infrastructure remained state-owned,” explained Creecy.
