The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that a three-month-old baby has died following a shooting in Yellowwood Street, Bonteheuwel, on Friday morning.
Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi said Bishop Lavis detectives are pursuing leads to track down the suspects responsible for the infant’s death and the attempted murder of an adult woman.
“Earlier this morning, two unidentified armed men entered the premises and proceeded to one of the living rooms. One of the men fired a gunshot, which left the three-month-old baby with serious injuries. The child was rushed to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. The unidentified suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. The motive for this attack is believed to be gang related,” Swartbooi said.
Meanwhile, Bishop Lavis Crime Prevention Forum (BLCPF) chairperson Graham Lindhorst has called for stronger interventions to quell violence in the area.
“SAPS needs to up their game. I doubt they have the expertise to deal with what is currently taking place on the Cape Flats. We are calling on SAPS to do more in the Bishop Lavis precinct as we cannot continue to live in such fear. We have to find a way to reduce the murder rate and restore peace in the area,” he said.
Police investigations are ongoing.
