The University of Cape Town (UCT) has announced that from the 1st of October, it will no longer rely on AI detection tools to identify machine-generated student work.
The decision has sparked significant discussion among educators and academic experts, drawing both praise for its forward-thinking approach and questions about how the university will maintain standards and fairness in assessments.
Speaking to VOC News, Director at the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching at UCT, Sukaina Walji, said the AI detection tool was not reliable enough to definitively judge that a piece of work is AI-generated.
